husband was in hospital with smallpox. He was removed on March 23rd from Bethnal
Green. Mrs. N—— was exposed to infection from about March 17th to March 23rd
whilst attending to her husband before he was removed. On April 1st or 2nd Mrs.
N—was taken ill with general malaise and pains in limbs and about her body. On
April 3rd the medical attendant observed an eruption of a measly character on her arms
but none was noticed elsewhere. On the 7th there were no signs of any eruption of any
description resembling smallpox and the patient appeared quite well.
VACCINATION.
The latest official figures as to vaccination are for the year 1901. The number
of children not finally accounted for as regards vaccination during that year amounted
to 44.4 per cent. of the Children born in Shoreditch during the year. The percentage
exempted by Conscientious Objection Certificates was 0.3, the number of certificates
granted by the Magistrates being thirteen. As compared with the figures for the previous
year there would appear to have been a marked increase in the number of
vaccinations in 1901. The percentages for previous years are contained in the Annual
Report for 1903.
SCARLET FEVER (SCARLATINA).
The cases of scarlet fever certified during the year numbered 343 as compared with
255 for the previous year. Intimations were received from the Metropolitan Asylums
Board Authorities that in 23 of these the patients were not suffering from scarlet fever,
the diagnosis being erythema in six, German measles in five, measles in three, diphtheria
in one, nephritis in one and tonsilitis in one; whilst in six instances the
diagnosis was not stated. The actual number of scarlet fever cases, after deducting
these, was, therefore, 320, as compared with 237 in 1903.

The distribution of the cases certified and the deaths amongst males and females during the year 1903in the Borough and its four registration sub-districts is as shown in the subjoined Table:—
