COFFEEHOUSES, COOKSHOPS AND FRIEDFISH SHOPS.
The coffeehouses and cookshops and other premises of a similar character, upon
which food is sold or prepared for sale, were subject to inspection during the year, and
the results may be briefly summarised as follows : —
Inspector Lear visited 34, including 8 friedfish shops. Of these 14, including
3 friedfish shops, were found in a clean and satisfactory condition. The remainder all
more or less required attention, mostly in respect to the limewashing and cleansing of
walls and ceilings. In a few cases dust receptacles were defective, and water supply
apparatus of the water closets were out of order.
Of 19, including 7 friedfish shops, visited by Inspector Firth, 14, 5 of which
were friedfish shops, were in a satisfactory condition. Of the remainder, in 5 the
kitchens were not in a cleanly condition, and in 1 there was no dust receptacle.
Inspector Jordan visited 77, 8 of which were friedfish shops. Of these, 58,
including 5 of the friedfish shops, were in a clean and satisfactory condition. With
respect to the remainder, there were dirty rooms and kitchens in 17, the walls of the
yards and water-closets were dirty in 3, dust receptacles were required in 8, water
flushes to th6 water-closets were defective in 2, the yard paving was defective in one
instance, and in another the sink was not properly trapped.
Inspector Langstone visited 35, 7 of which were friedfish shops. Of these, 28,
including 6 of the friedfish shops, were in a clean and satisfactory condition. The
others required more or less attention; in 4 the kitchens were not in a cleanly
condition, and in 3 there were delapidated dust receptacles.
Of 22, including 9 friedfish shops, visited by Inspector Clements, 13, of which
6 were friedfish shops, were in a. clean and satisfactory condition. With respect to
the remainder, in 5 the water-closets were out of order, in 2 the kitchens required
cleansing, in 2 the yard paving was defective, and in 4 instances the dust receptacles
were delapidated or wanting.
Altogether, 148 cookshops and eating houses, and 39 fried fish shops were under
inspection during the year, as compared with 138, and 38 for 1902. They were all
visited once, but where the premises were not found to be kept in a satisfactory
condition they were visited at frequent intervals until a better state of things was
ascertained to exist. As the result of the inspection 102 cookshops and eating houses,
and 25 friedfish shops were found to be kept in a satisfactory and cleanly condition.
With regard to the remainder, want of proper attention to cleanliness was the
predominant evil. Some 59 sanitary notices were served upon the parties responsible!
and the necessary steps were taken to remedy the defects found existing. In no
instance were police court proceedings necessary.
