Hay Street. Some eight small three-roomed houses were pulled down in connection
with an improvement which is being carried out for widening Goldsmith
Row.
Shepherdess Walk, Nos. 106 and 108, have been demolished, and the site is
occupied by a Hostel now in course of erection.
The number of persons displaced, when all the houses above referred to have
been demolished, will probably not be less than 600, and a considerable proportion of
them will have been obliged to seek dwellings elsewhere than in Shoreditch.
SMOKE NUISANCE.
The various shafts and chimneys, other than those of private dwellings, were kept
under observation by the sanitary inspectors during the year, with a view to preventing
the emission of black smoke. Some 14 communications on the subject respecting
10 premises were received from the London County Council, and two respecting three
premises from the Coal Smoke Abatement Society. In each instance the existence of
the nuisance was brought to the notice of the person responsible, and steps were
taken to abate the same. It was not necessary to bring any of the eases under the
notice of the Health Committee.
