The summary of the sanitary work given above includes that done in connection with
the drains and water-closets of new buildings, and also the work done in pursuance of
the requirements of the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, with the exception of that
carried out for the purpose of fitting underground bakehouses for the certificate of the
Sanitary Authority. This work is more particularly referred to later, when dealing
with the subject of bakehouses.
In most instances the preliminary notices setting forth the insanitary conditions
requiring attention, served by the sanitary inspectors, were complied with. In 195
cases, however, it was necessary for the Sanitary Authority to serve statutory notices
under the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, upon persons responsible for the abate-
ment of nuisances.

For non-compliance with these notices, and for infringement of bye-laws made under the Act, Police-court proceedings were taken in respect to the premises, and with the results as set out below:
