percent. in the 76 enumeration areas into which the Borough was divided for the purpose
of the 1901 Census. The results obtained may be briefly stated as follows:—In the
major portion of the Shorediteh South registration sub-district the population was less
than 100 persons to the acre. In the neighbourhood of the blocks of artizans dwellings,
situate in the angle formed between Great Eastern and Paul Streets, the density was
from 100 to 200 persons per acre. The population was thickest in Shorediteh South'
in the northern portion of the sub-district, where there were one or two localities with .
from 250 to 300 persons to the acre. In the Hoxton New Town sub-district, with
the exception of the north-west corner in the region of the Wenlock basin of the
Regent's Canal the population everywhere averaged more than 100 persons percent.
It was thickest in the region of Nile Street. The neighbourhood of Chatham Avenue
is one of the most densely populated portions of the Borough. The number of persons
dwelling on the area bounded by the centres of the roadways of Britannia, Murray,
Provost and Bbenezer Streets was, on the night of the census, 2,139, being no less than
509 persons to the acre. The greater part of this area is occupied by the artizans' dwellings,
situate in Chatham Avenue. In none of the enumeration acres of Hoxton Old
Town was the population less than 150 persons to the acre. It was thickest in the
neighbourhoods of Aske and Fanshaw Streets and Turner's Square. In the latter
locality it averaged 478 persons to the acre. The population of the Haggerston subdistrict
was in none of the enumeration areas less than 100 persons to the acre.
North of the Canal the density was from 100 to 300 per acre. South of the Canal and
Bast of the Kingsland Road, the variations in density were between 100 and 400
percent. West of the Kingsland Road is relatively the most populous part of
Haggerston. In the neighbourhood of Wilmer Gardens the density was 540, and in
the neighbourhood of Essex Street was 547 per acre. It is needless to remark that
these very densely populated localities are, practically, entirely occupied by tenement
houses.
The number of births registered during the year was 3,932, of which 1,999
were male and 1,933 female. In the Shorediteh Infirmary and Workhouse there
were 41 males and 40 females born, a total of 81, of which 38 were regarded as
legitimate and 43 illegitimate. In the Holborn Union Workhouse, the births
numbered 97, of which 57 were male and 40 female, 36 being entered as legitimate
and 61 illegitimate.
