In reply to an enquiry from the Council the Vestry expressed the opinion that
where peat litter was used this by-law should apply to the carriage of horse dung
manure.
BAKEHOUSES.
The bakehouses on the Vestry's register for the year 1898, number 88*, the list
remaining the same as in 1897; 57 are situate underground, 25 above ground, and 6
are partly underground. As the result of inspection 78 were in a satisfactory sanitary
condition, and 10 were fairly satisfactory.
The subjoined figures serve to shew the results of the work carried out under the
supervision of your sanitary officers during the past seven years in connection with the
bakehouses in the parish:—

During 1898 sanitary work was found to be necessary in connection with 31, and
was duly executed under the supervision of the Vestry's sanitary inspectors. One
bakehouse was entirely rebuilt. In 6 the drains were reconstructed throughout. The
remainder of the work consisted principally of limewashing and cleansing.
During the year, in consequence of changes in the tenancies, four bakehouses
were closed, but were re-opened in each case after an interval of a few weeks.
COWHOUSES.
In the year 1866, according to the Vestry's Annual Report, there were 49
cowhouses in Shoreditch, and the number of cows kept was stated to have exceeded
600. In 1878 there were 39 cowhouses with 408 cows, and the number has gone on
gradually decreasing.
The cowhouses licensed in the parish now number 14, and are situate at the
addresses set out below:—

Clift Street, No. la. Hoxton Street, No. 242.
*According to the report of the medical officer of health of Shoreditch for the year ending
March, 1868, there were at that time 147 bakehouses in Shoreditch.
