To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch.
Gentlemen,
This report which I have the honour to submit to you relates to the public
health, sanitary condition, and vital statistics of the Parish during the year
ending December 31, 1898.
POPULATION.
The population of Shoreditch for the year 1898 is estimated at 121,740. The
average number of persons living on each acre of the parish is 188, as compared with
60 for the metropolis. The estimated populations in the four registration districts
are contained in

Excluding the inmates of the Holborn Union Workhouse, situate in the New
Town registration district, estimated at 1,370, the population of this district for
statistical purposes is 28,380, and the population of the parish is 120,370.
BIBTHS.
The births registered during the year numbered 4,281, 2,147 of males, and 2,134
of females, showing an excess of 13 male, as compared with female births. In the
Shoreditch Infirmary there were 90 births, 54 of males, and 36 of females ; 38 were
legitimate, and 52 illegitimate. In the Holborn Union workhouse there were 48
births, 28 of males, and 20 of females; 17 being legitimate, and 81 illegitimate.
The births exceeded the deaths by 1,577.
