In the following table are shewn the number of cases certified, and the deaths
amongst males and females in the four registration districts of the parish:—

The number of cases of diphtheria certified was at the rate of 2.l per 1,000
inhabitants. The number of cases removed for treatment to the various hospitals
was 200 or 77.2 per cent, of the cases certified as compared with 67.0 per cent, in
1897, and 55.6 per cent, in 1896.
The total number of cases certified in London during 1898, was 11,871 which
gives with the estimated population an attack-rate of 2.6 per thousand inhabitants.
The deaths numbered 1,772, and the death-rate was 0.39 per thousand.
During the year enquiries were made into the circumstances of 205 of the cases
of diphtheria certified in Shoreditch, and the subjoined table shews the distribution
of the cases amongst males and females at certain age periods :—
