a suggestion of a plan for mitigating the nuisance
arising from the escape of sewage-gases from
Gullies.
The difficulty of mitigating the nuisance and danger
arising from the escape of sewage-gases from gullies
and ventilating shafts, has been shown in an elaborate
Report by Mr. Haywood, the Engineer to the City
Commission of Sewers. I will not presume to follow
Mr. Haywood in all the objections he has pointed out,
to the working of the various plans that have been
proposed, with the view of diminishing the noxious
properties of the gases, by deodorising the sewage while
running in the sewers; by more thorough waterflushing;
by burning the gases; by ventilating pipes
or chimneys; or by other means. I entertain a strong
opinion that a more copious supply of water at the
periphery of our sewage-system, is necessary to ensure
its efficient working; and I am satisfied that if the flow
of fresh water into the sewers could be considerably
increased, more would be accomplished, than by any
