At the end of 1923, 1,150 premises were on the Register of the Department as compared with
1,446 at the-end of 1914. During 1924, 37 premises were removed from the Register and 70 added,
making the total at the end of the year 1,183.
The Department reported the opening of 26 workshops to the Home Office, and received from
that Office notice of 39, 27 of which were already known to the Department.
Homework (Outworkers).—Local employers of outworkers sent in 38 lists in February, and the
like number in August. These lists contained 471 names and addresses, of which 365 were forwarded
to other districts. From other districts 333 addresses within the borough were received. As usual
the majority of the lists of addresses were received from the City of London, Kensington and
Westminster.
Supervision.—There were during the year 2,308 inspections, including 620 of factories, 1,662 of
workshops and 26 of workplaces.
The inspector reported the existence of 210 nuisances or defects on registered premises, 207 of
which were remedied during the year, the majority on his verbal request.
He served 13 notices during the year. The defects found comprised—
