BIRTH RATE.
The births registered during the year were 4,779, and are equal
to a rate of 37.0 per thousand population at all ages. This rate is
slightly lower than that of the preceding year, which I calculated
at 37.3. The general Metropolitan birth rate has also decreased,
and stands at 29.5 per thousand population. This is the lowest
London birth rate on record, and is (as was the case in 1897)
seven and a half per thousand below our own.
The birth rates in the sub-districts are shown in the table below.
The death rate in each sub-district is also given for purposes of comparison.
Sub-District. | Birth Rate. | Death Rate. |
---|---|---|
North | 39.9 | 22.7 |
South | 37.7 | 24.9 |
East | 32.2 | 19.6 |
The following table compares the birth rates for Bethnal Green and for London by quarters.
