Population
The Registrar-General's estimate of the population of the
Borough, mid-year, 1967, was 302,660, an increase of 980 over the
figure "for the previous year. This figure gives a density of 7.7
persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population, measured by excess of
births over deaths, was 1,447. The figure for 1966 was 1,656.
Births
There were 4,520 live births allocated to the Borough during
1967, after adjustments for inward and outward transfers, this being
a decrease of 255 over the figure for the previous year.
Of the 4,520 live births, 3,600 occurred in hospital and 920 in
private dwellings. 2,346 of these births were males and 2,174
females.
The crude birth rate for the Borough was 14.9 per 1,000
population, and the adjusted rate, for use when comparing one
area with another was 15.0.
The birth rate for 1967 was 0.9 lower than that recorded for
the previous year, and 1.4 below that of 1965, and is also well
below the figures of 17.0 and 17.2 for Greater London and England
and Wales respectively.
In addition to the live births, there were 64 stillbirths, representing
a rate of 14 per 1,000 total births. This rate is above that
of 13.3 for Greater London, but below that of 14.8 for the country
as a whole. The figure for the Borough for 1966 was 15.0 per 1,000
total births.
Deaths
3,073 deaths were registered in 1967, giving a crude death
rate of 10.2 per 1,000 population. This rate, when standardized by
the comparability factor, gives a figure of 9.9 for comparison
purposes. The rates for Greater London, and England and Wales
were 10.8 and 11.2 respectively. Comparative figures for the year
1966 were: Bromley 10.3, Greater London 11.1, England and
Wales 11.7.
