necessary to run down the Diagnostic Unit and thus provide an
additional classroom for the "School Proper". The few children
who would remain at the Unit for the Spring Term 1968, would
transfer to the new unit to be opened at Midfield Junior School
after Easter, 1968.
The School now runs a full range of social activities in order
to prepare the children to merge with the community, and many
visits to factories and other firms, also places of general interest
were made. In this, the offer of a minibus by the Variety Club of
Great Britain, due to arrive shortly after Easter, 1968, will be a
great asset.
The adventure playground built with the help of the Headmaster
and boys of the Ramsden Secondary School is now a feature
of which the Authority will take notice.
Swimming takes place regularly at Beckenham Baths by the
senior children and at Warren Road School by the courtesy of
the Headmaster. These activities resulted in 37 of the children
now being proficient swimmers. One Goddington boy has the rare
distinction of being the first child in Bromley to win the Borough
of Bromley's Swimming Award.
The staff rightly feel that if the broad aims of education are
to prepare the child to take its rightful place in the community,
such striving must be re-enforced when the child's intellectual
capacity is below par.
Whilst the child is in school, the school he/she attends must
gain full acceptance by the local community so that the acceptance
on leaving school is taken as a matter of course. Such an acceptance,
Goddington has enjoyed from the start and many of the neighbours
are members of the Friends of Goddington School Association
Three members serve on the Association's Committee and have
come in in a big way on the fund raising programme. The target
of the fund is a Swimming Pool for the school and the project is
expected to come to fruition in 1968.
The Headmaster is most helpful in allowing the related services
to hold professional meetings at the school. The Kent Paediatric
Society often meet at the school.
Individual visitors are also welcome at the school and
invariably comment on the atmosphere of bustle and enjoyment
prevailing at Goddington
