School Psychological Service
I am grateful to Mrs. P. Preston, Senior Educational Psychologist,
for the following report:—
This year the Psychological Service has investigated 937
children, carried out counselling duties in the schools, and completed
two educational surveys.
The work of the School Psychological Service relates to most
agencies concerned with the care, welfare and education of children,
and may be best presented in terms of the areas of service it
covers, thus:—
I. In the Schools.
Total available Educational Psychologists time—14 sessions
per week—637 children (age range 4+ years-16+ years) were
investigated individually and reported on by the Educational
Psychologists and the following additional work carried out:—
(a) Infant Schools.
(1) A Report on the large scale experimental screening
for slow learners was compiled last April and
the second year phase is nearing completion.
(2) Advisory service was given to the special opportunity
classes and inter disciplinary group discussions and
educational visits were arranged.
(b) Junior Schools.
(1) Regular monthly meetings have taken place with the
remedial teachers—Mrs. Waite. Mr. Rogers, Mrs.
Carter and Mrs. Hooper.
(2) Consideration given to the slow learners' needs—a
follow on of the infant screening programme. In
this connection Educational Psychologists have
attended 17 Panel meetings at which approximately
160 slow learners were discussed with Assistant
Medical Officers and Heads of Schools.
(c) Secondary Schools.
A survey into the reading difficulties at secondary
level was completed showing the need for some remedial
reading provision in schools. This is now being discussed
with Mr. Thomas, Assistant Education Officer for
Secondary Education, Mr. Warren, Senior Adviser, and
Miss Jenkins, the Adviser for Secondary Schools.
