2. Games and Athletics.
The normal games programme has been carried out despite
the inclement weather conditions, but this year the exceptionally
sodden state of the grounds used for hockey, together with the
unsuitable footgear often worn by many girls, has appreciably
limited the scope of training. A very successful Hockey Tournament
staged in Bromley for approximately 17 schools from the
North West Kent area, was arranged by the Kent Women's Hockey
Association towards the end of the Spring Term. During dinner
hour periods in the summer months schools with adjacent outdoor
facilities took advantage of them to accommodate inter-form, interhouse,
inter-age group matches and athletic training practices.
It is pleasing to note the introduction of Rugby Football as a
new venture in Secondary Modern Schools.
Football.—Bromley Schools have again been well represented
in the West Kent Schools XI. and several boys were selected for
County trials, but were unfortunate in that they failed to achieve
places in the County Team.
Cricket.—Friendly matches are still favoured in both Primary
and Secondary schools in the Borough. Two Secondary Modern
schoolboys have distinguished themselves by being chosen for the
County Schools Cricket XI. One of these boys played in all
matches throughout the season.
Athletics.—A one-day course for Athletics for Girls was held
at Elgood Playing Field. Beckenham, at the beginning of the Easter
Term. It was attended by a great many girls from the Upper
forms of various schools who have a special interest in athletics.
Bromley schools gave a very good performance at a special
invitation competition involving nine schools from the Borough
and neighbouring areas.
Individual School Sports.—Sports Meetings were arranged
early in the Summer Term, so that choice of entry for the NorthWest
Kent Sports could be determined.
North-West Kent Sports.—These Sports were held with
success on the playing field of a Bromley Secondary School.
Twenty-two boys and girls gained places in various events and six
boys and three girls went forward to the Kent County Sports.
Kent County Sports.—In two events (100 yards and 440
yards) Bromley boys were successful and were selected for the
All England Championship, one boy being placed.
3. Swimming Instruction.
The continued co-operation of the Baths Department is greatly
appreciated. Facilities are now used to their fullest extent and
requests for accommodation have been granted whenever possible.
