ACUTE ANTERIOR POLIOMYELITIS.
Eight notifications of this disease were received during the
year. Six of these cases were removed to hospital. Seven were
paralytic and one non-paralytic. There were no deaths from this
disease in Bromley.
Months during which the cases were notified:—
May—2. June—2. July—3. December—1.
It was apparent that there were many other cases during the
year who had the prodromal symptoms without reaching a diagnostic
stage. Present state of the seven paralytic cases:—
1. Family moved from area—no information.
2. J.M. Had facial paralysis, which although not quite gone, is almost
imperceptible. Is still under Doctor but is having no treatment. Otherwise
no other ill effects or handicaps.
3. C.W. Still in Hospital. Likely to remain there for another year. Both
legs affected. Up now for ½ hour each day. Has boots and will have
caliper for right leg soon.
4. J.B. Child well and healthy. Right leg muscles affected. Attending
Hospital twice weekly for treatment—wearing right leg walking caliper
satisfactorily. Good home care.
5. L.M. In Hospital 6/52 and has recovered fully without any complications.
6. R.K In Hospital 6/52. Attended Hospital for remedial exercises
twice weekly for 3/12 and has now fully recovered.
7. K.J. Was in Hospital 6/52 and had no complications from polio.
SCARLET FEVER.
This disease continues to be mild in character. One hundred
and twenty cases were notified, giving an attack rate of 1.86 per
1.000 population.
Twenty-seven of these cases were removed to hospital, the
remainder being home nursed.
There were 3 "return" cases.
There were no deaths from this disease recorded in the
Borough during 1953. The widely spread presence of Haemolytic
Streptococci "A"—the causal organism of Scarlet Fever—makes
notification of Scarlet Fever of little use in the control of infection.
DIPHTHERIA.
For the third year in succession, no cases were notified in the
Borough.
