Championships of the Association. The standard of football in
the Primary Schools Section is commendable and most promising
for the future.
Primary Schools generally show a great interest and take a
full part in out-of-school games and activities. Football, cricket,
netball. rounders, shinty and swimming have been well organised
and supported throughout the year.
6. Youth Activities.
The necessity for reduced expenditure on recreative work of
all kinds has limited the choice of physical activities previously
enjoyed by many clubs. Only one class of gymnastics for boys and
a more recreative class for girls are permitted within the Borough.
A great deal of activity, however, is still in progress out of doors
and pitches for football, cricket, netball and tennis are in steady
demand. The period of National Service has apparently adversely
affected attendances at many of the clubs.
Cycling. Walking and Youth Hostelling provide the greater
part of the summer programme and the excellent opportunities
within the area encourage clubs to arrange their own expeditions.
7. Adult Classes.
Classes in English Folk Dancing are held weekly in the
Autumn and Spring terms and it is with regret that we find the
very active local Scottish Folk Dance classes transferred to an area
where more financial assistance is possible.
8. Conclusion.
Good progress is being maintained generally in Physical
Education, though the lack of suitable footgear is proving a
limiting factor in outdoor work. The support of parents in the
provision of Physical Education clothing and shoes has on the
whole been praiseworthy, but there are still the few cases where
assistance in kind is essential. The many " Open Days." sports
days, galas, and parents' afternoons give ample opportunity for
parents to see their children in action and to gain their sympathy
and support.
Numerous visitors from local authorities, training colleges,
and from overseas, who are interested in Physical Education, have
visited the schools during the year.
The Advisers wish to record their appreciation of the support
of the Borough Education Officer and his staff and of the cooperation
of the Head Teachers and Assistant Teachers in the
schools.
