PHYSICAL TRAINING.
A full and detailed report by Miss Bentley and Mr. Loughran,
Area Advisers on Physical Training, has been submitted to the
Committee, a report which is worthy of close study.
I feel conscious of my limitations when I have taken the
liberty of extracting, for the purposes of the report on the health
of the School Child, some statments from their report.
General.—During the year under review the broader conception
of Physical Education mentioned in my last report has found
wider acceptance and has now brought about a fuller realisation
of the aims and objects of Physical Education throughout the
area. Considerable progress has been made in most branches
of the subject, but particularly in the Infant and Junior Schools.
We have discovered that younger children especially will
adjust themselves in their own way and in their own time.
Taken as individuals and not as a class unit, the Infant School
children now seem much more skilful, active and venturesome
than formerly.
We have travelled far from the day when the whole school
as a unit took part in a daily period of set military exercises.
Primary Junior Schools.—Physical Education in the Junior
School has of late received considerable stimulus from the welcome
introduction into so many of our schools of outdoor agility
apparatus of various kinds.
Secondary Modern Schools.—The work in the gymnasium,
both for older boys and girls, provides a wide contribution to
the education of the individual, particularly in respect of a
sense of discipline, concentration, quick response, health and
cleanliness.
