SPEECH CLINIC.
(See Table III, Group V, and Table VII.)
This service is operated through the Health Department at
Maidstone.
One session of 2½ hours per week is held at the South Clinic,
Princes Plain, under the control of Dr. Stableforth.
43 sessions were held during the year.
Lip reading classes for children who are "hard of hearing"
are also operated through the County Health Department, and,
commencing from 16th October, 1948, classes have been held on
Saturday mornings at the South Clinic, Princes Plain, under the
supervision of Miss E. C. Duke.
EXCEPTIONAL AND HANDICAPPED CHILDREN.
The total of attendances at the special clinic held at the
Municipal Offices on Saturday mornings for exceptional and
handicapped children during 1948 was 131.
Details of all handicapped children are shown in Table VIII.
CHILD GUIDANCE.
(See Table Illj Group V.)
Responsibility for this service rests with the County School
Medical Officer, to whom all cases are referred for treatment at
the Child Guidance Clinic at Chislehurst. 28 cases were so
referred during the year, after reports had been received from
the head teacher of the child's school and an environmental
report had been received from the School Nurse.
Owing to the long waiting list, there is considerable delay
in receiving appointments, and further sessions are required.
MILK IN SCHOOLS.
There is no change to report in the arrangements for the
provision of milk during the year. The permitted quantity of
milk per child per day has throughout the year remained at
one-third of a pint.
A return to the Ministry of Education shows that, on a day
in October, the percentage of pupils receiving milk, based on the
number in attendance, was 92%.
