Introduction.
To the Chairman and Members of the Welfare Committee.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The School Health Services in the "excepted District" of
Bromley have continued to function well throughout the year
and have complied with the County Scheme for the Health of
the School Child. All the age groups, viz.: five, eight, eleven
and thirteen years old, were medically examined at school,
necessitating 245 sessions for the examination of 3,035 children.
There are, however, some schools where the facilities for a proper
medical examination at school are impracticable and it was
necessary to carry out these examinations at special sessions at
the School Clinic.
These periodic medical inspections, because they are complete
examinations, bring to light certain defects in the child
which are causing, or might cause, serious interference with the
child's receiving the full benefit of the education provided. It
is again pleasing to note that the parents attend and welcome
these medical examinations and, in the case of the primary
schools, the attendance of parents is almost 100 per cent.
The following up of children found to have defects is carried
out at the school medical clinics of which there are four in the
Borough. The clinics are available to parents and teachers
seeking advice on the children and is perhaps the main field of
work in the School Health Services. In association with the
medical clinics are the minor ailment treatment clinics; no less
than 6,656 medical examinations were carried out and 16,030
attendances were made at these clinics by children, during the
year.
The co-operation with the Hospital services is a close one and
complete, and I am indeed indebted to the staff at the hospitals
for the help they render us and the children.
The figures are indicative of the confidence the parents
place in the School Health Service and this link between the
