SECTION G. PREVALENCE OF, AND CONTROL OVER
INFECTIOUS AND OTHER DISEASES.
Statistical details regarding notifiable diseases are shown in
Tables X, XI and XII in the Appendix.
SCARLET FEVER
124 cases were notified during the year, giving an attack
rate of 1.96 per 1,000 population. The cases were widespread in
time and area, and there was no mortality. Seventy-nine of the
cases were isolated in hospital, which is 63.7 per cent, of all
notifications. There were six "return" cases. The type of
infection continues to be mild and there were no serious complications
in any of the cases.
DIPHTHERIA.
Three cases were notified during the year, all of which
occurred in children of school age. In the case of two of these
children, who had not been immunised, the attack was severe
and of gravis type bacilli. The third child had been immunised
against the disease and this was a mild attack.
Diphtheria Immunisation is the only known means protecting
childhood against the menace of diphtheria and every effort
is made to induce parents to have their children immunised.
DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION.
The responsibility for this service has now passed from the
Local Authority to the County Council. Immunisation is carried
out at the various school clinics in the area by the Assistant
School Medical Officers.
POLIOMYELITIS AND POLIOENCEPHALITIS.
Three cases of Poliomyelitis and one case of Polioencephalitis
were notified during the year, as against the figures of 30 and 2
cases respectively for 1947.
There was one adult death from Poliomyelitis, in addition
to the adult fatal case of Polioencephalitis.
TYPHOID FEVER.
A Bromley case of Typhoid (a boy of 14 years) occurred
in Farnborough Hospital and died on 28th November, 1948. The
illness began about 23rd September, 1948; he was admitted to
hospital for observation on October 29th, and was not diagnosed
until November 11th, confirmed on November 16th and officially
notified to me on November 17th.
