POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the population (mid1948)
is 63.360, which is an increase of 720 on the corresponding
figure for 1947, equivalent to a density of 9.7 persons per acre.

It is now 18 years since the last Census and a change in the
character of the population, age grouping, employment and distribution
has occurred, and without these statistical details it is
not possible to report on any actions necessary to safeguard the
health of the population nor on services necessary for their wellbeing.
A case in point, it is known that during these recent
years, there has been a proportionate increase in the higher age
groups, calling for services for the care and protection of the
aged and infirm.

The birth rate for 1948, is 16.4 per 1,000 population.
