SECTION H.
OTHER SERVICES SUPERVISED BY THE
HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
DISEASES OF ANIMALS ACTS.
122 inspections were made by the Chief Sanitary Inspector
in connection with the administration of the Disease of Animals
Acts, of which 15 were in respect of routine visits in connection
with suspected swine fever, 14 with regard to fowl pest, and 93
routine.
During the year, many outbreaks of fowl pest occurred in
England and Wales, and orders were made to restrict the movement
of poultry to prevent the spread of this disease.
The presence of fowl pest was confirmed on 12 separate
premises in the Borough, and all necessary action was taken.
REGISTRIES FOR FEMALE DOMESTIC SERVANTS.
There are no special comments to make.
PETROLEUM ACTS.
95 licences for the storage of petroleum and one for the
storage of carbide of calcium were issued.
118 visits of inspection were made by the Chief Sanitary
Inspector, who is the Inspector under the Petroleum Acts, and
no contraventions were discovered during the year.
RETAIL MARKET.
The market tolls collected during 1947 amounted to
£138 14s. 6d., a decrease of £18 on the corresponding figure for
1946. This was due, principally, to the severe weather conditions
which prevailed during the first three months of the year.
It is of interest to note that since the market is open on
Thursdays, and as Christmas Day, 1947, was on a Thursday, the
market was open for 1| hours on that day, thereby complying
with the Royal Charter which was granted in 1205.
