order that the general public may be safeguarded against
food compounds which may be deleterious to health.
MEAT AND OTHER FOODS.
Private slaughtering- remains iji sb eyance during the
present emergency, and the usual tabulations of carcases
inspected for disease are omitted. Nevertheless there has
been no relaxation in the necessary duties of inspection of
foodstuffs unfit for human consumption. The Sanitary
Inspectors-, have dealt with "a large quantity of food surrendered
as unfit for human consumption or uri'suitable for sale
to the public, and it is incumbent on them to determine
whether unfit food ??? shall .be destroyed, or salvaged as
fit for animal food, soap making, or rendered fit by treatment.
Unfit food returned to the central depot is dyed green
to ensure its being recognised as unfit food after having
left the district.

The following is a tabulation of unsound and'unwholesome food surrendered and condemned:-
