Much work is done throughout the year by the
Sanitary Inspectors to combat the rat nuisance. Applications
made during Rat Week are often instrumental in
bringing to light infestations which have hitherto
remained unknown, and the Inspectors are able to
investigate and institute the necessary remediable
measures. Steps are taken to obtain co-operation between
all concerned where serious infestations are found to exist
and many good results have been achieved.
The following figures show to some extent the
activities of the officers of the Department during 1936:—
Total number of inspections made 346
Total number of infestations discovered 96
Total number of infestations abated (some
of' which were discovered during 1935) 100
PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
The sanitary condition of the elementary schools is
reported on in the School Medical Service section of this
Report, where is indicated the improvements carried out
by the Local Education Authority, and the necessity to
improve the hygienic conditions existing in the older
Church schools which do not meet the requirements of
modern standards.
