SECTION C.— SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES
OF THE AREA.
Water.
There is nothing to add to the particulars of public
water supply given on page 43 of my Annual Report for
1935, where details also of the most recent results of
bacteriological and chemical examinations carried out by
the Metropolitan Water Board will be found.
Drainage and Sewerage.
The main drainage of Bromley links up with the
undertaking of the West Kent Main Sewerage Board
whose purification works are at Dartford. A relief
branch main sewer 2,370 yards in length and 30 inches in
diameter has been laid from Shortlands Bridge to Bromley
Road to provide further outfall facilities for the soil
drainage of properties in the valley of the Ravensbourne.
Contracts have also been entered into for the duplication
of the Sludge Digestion Works inaugurated in 1935 and
the work has commenced.
The surface water drainage system was extended
during the re-construction of Hayes Lane, Pickhurst Lane,
Baston Road and Hayes Street, and a soil sewer was laid
in Lennard Road.
Cesspool Drainage.
One new house was erected with cesspool drainage
during 1936.

in the sanitation of the added areas of Hayes and Keston,
where there were 360 premises not connected to main
drainage at the time these areas were taken over by the
Borough. No less than 249 have been connected to main
drainage, leaving a balance of 111 not yet connected, and
of these 57 have no sewer available.
Rivers and Streams.
Apart from the normal piping of small streams by
estate developers, culverting operations were carried out to
the Bourne and part of the Ravensbourne streams. A
reinforced concrete culvert was provided for a length of
