17. Registration and inspection of Nursing Homes
under the Nursing Homes Registration Act,
1927.

Ante-Natal Clinic.

The following table gives figures of attendances made during the past ten years, viz., 1927-1936:—

An Ante-Natal Clinic is held weekly with the Assistant
Medical Officer of Health in attendance.
Cases who are admitted to the Maternity Hospital may
attend the Ante-Natal Clinics held there under the supervision
of the Hospital nursing staff.
With regard to the year's activities of the Ante-Natal
Clinic under the control of the Local Authority, although
we record an increase in individual attendances, viz., 193
in 1936 as against 162 in 1935, the average of individuals
attending remains stationary at five per session for both
years. The attendance of 193 mothers represents only 24
per cent. of the total notified births (live and still) for
1936. It is regrettable, therefore, to find that the use of
facilities provided still falls far short of the extent to
which they should be utilised.
Public Health authorities are constantly stressing the
vital need of regular and efficient ante-natal examination
by skilled medical practitioners as an all-important factor
in any attempt to reduce maternal mortality. In any
