One would like to see increased attention given to the
practice of hygiene by the children. For example, the
abolition of roller towels would help to control catarrhal
infection and infectious skin conditions, thus teaching the
child how to practice prevention of disease, and, further,
it should not be necessary in these enlightened days to be
compelled to carry out repeated vermin inspection of all
children merely because a few suffer from parental neglect.
Medical Inspection.
All children coming within the three age groups,
viz., entrants, second age group (intermediates) and third
age group (leavers), are medically inspected at school, and
those discovered with defects are re-inspected and referred
through the necessary channels for treatment. The medical
inspections are not limited to these routine inspections, hut
extended to the special inspections at the school clinics
and special clinics. During the year no less than 5,015
cases came under medical inspection (excluding Dental
inspections), and these figures give some indication of the
extent of the work required of the officers of the School
Medical Services.
In addition there is the medical examination of all
employed children, the special examination of the mentally
retarded, the physically defective, the blind, the deaf, the
maladjusted child, and all requiring special school
education.
Every child is dentally inspected once a year by the
School Dental Surgeon, and each child comes under
cleanliness inspection three times each year by the school
nurses.
The statistical recording of these examinations is
largely the recording of defects as required by the Board
