Five samples of milk were tested for the presence of
tubercle bacilli and after inoculation tests the results
were negative.
The sixteen unsatisfactory samples of ordinary milk
were found to have unduly high bacterial counts and
presence of bacillus coli. In each case, after the matter
had been taken up with the producers concerned, much
improvement was effected.
Contraventions.
No serious cases of contraventions of the Milk and
Dairies Order, 1926, were encountered during the year.
Meat.
There are two licenced and six registered slaughterhouses
in the Borough. Regular visits are made to
these slaughterhouses, 2,928 animals were known to have
been slaughtered and 2,922 were examined by the
Sanitary Inspectors after slaughter. Ninety-nine per
cent, of the carcases were seen.
In addition to carcases examined in butchers' shops,
the inspectors also examined on the request of local
butchers 395 carcases coming from outside the district.
Complete co-operation exists between the local
butchers and the Department, and this in many instances
has proved helpful to all concerned.
The Local Authority granted 20 licences during 1934
to slaughtermen under the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.
