V.—SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Rivers and Streams.
Certain portions of the Ravensbourne and Quaggy
watercourses have been culverted during the past year
forming part of the gradual covering in of these streams
through built-up areas. During the year six inspections
were made and in one instance pollution of a minor
character was remedied after service of informal notice.
Drainage and Sewerage.
The main drainage of Bromley links up with the
undertaking of the West Kent Main Sewerage Board,
whose purification works are at Dartford. Sewerage is
there precipitated by gravitation before being discharged
into the River Thames.. Works for the digestion of
sludge were in course of construction during 1934 and at
the time of writing it is reported will shortly be
inaugurated.
The surface water drainage of the Borough is
separate from the system for foul drainage. No important
reconstruction schemes have been carried out during 1934,
but advantage has been taken where estate development
has been proceeded with, to put in sewers of a larger size
than could normally be required to be put in by the
Estate Developers, thus making provision for future
development.
Cesspool Drainage.
With the incorporation of Hayes and Keston into the
Borough of Bromley a survey was made by the Sanitary
Inspectors for the purpose of scheduling the methods of
drainage of the household property in the added areas on
the appointed day 1st April, 1934. This survey showed
that of the 361 premises not on main drainage:—
Those with Pail Closets 103 89 had sewers available.
14 sewers not available.
,, ,, Cesspools 254 82 had sewers available,
172 sewers not available.
,, ,, Purification
Plants 4 4 had sewers available.
