Report of the School Dental Surgeon for Year 1934.
(Group V.—Page 124).
Inspection.
During the year every elementary school in the
Borough was visited by the Dental Nurse and myself, and
a total of 5,158 children were individually examined. I
was glad to see a certain number of parents at each
inspection, for although they take up a considerable time,
their attendance indicates an interest in their children's
dental welfare.
Twenty-nine sessions were occupied in these
inspections; several schools required two visits because of
the large number of scholars, e.g., Princes Plain, Raglan
Road Boys and all the Departments of Burnt Ash,
notwithstanding the fact that an average of 177 individual
children were seen per session.
This year again St. Joseph's R.C. School, Plaistow
Lane, has furnished us with a most striking statistical
figure. It will be remembered that in 1933 this School
came under the purview of the Education Committee, and
for the first time in its history a dental inspection was
carried out. It will be seen from the Annual Report for
1933 that I found 84.9 per cent, of the scholars at this
school were in obvious need of attention. Treatment
was carried out subsequently for all who would accept it.
In September, 1934, 1 was sent to inspect the school for
the second time and it was found that I had only referred
on this occasion 52.7 per cent, for treatment. This figure
means that dental sepsis and decay had fallen by 32.2 per
cent, as a result of the school being allowed to participate
in the Committee's dental scheme. I would submit this
is a striking example of what dental treatment can do;
not only does the child derive greater comfort and health,
