tnem, and that, in consequence, there was an expenditure of

Disinfection and Disinfestation.
For disinfection purposes, rooms are sprayed with a
strong solution of formalin, with additional gas produced
subsequently in sealed-up rooms with formalin lamps (FormigatOirs).
The rooms are left closed from 8 to 24 hours,
or longer if not required. The bedding, clothing, etc., when
necessary, is steam disinfected in the Council's " Washington
Lyon " apparatus.
Disinfestation of parasites is dealt with as required on
application of residents, or at the direction of the School
Medical Officer. In these cases the fumes of burning sulphur
are relied upon for rooms; garments and bedding are
sterilised in the steam disinfeator.
Steam disinfection is carried out after bedrooms are
vacated by removal of tubercular patients by death or
otherwise, after convalescence of ordinary notifiable infectious
disease cases nursed at home—few in number—and
after deaths from cancer, on application. Most of the cases
of diphtheria, scarlet fever, and a few other infectious
diseases, upon notification, are removed to the Infectious
Diseases Hospital. The vacated room and its contents are
disinfected with formalin in the manner set out above.
Cleaning and airing of the room is always advised. The
remedving of any insanitary condition found by the inspector
whilst visiting is taken in hand as a routine matter.
Dairies, Cowsheds and Milk Stores.
There are 43 of these premises in use, 14 of them being
farms where cows are kept. Twice yearly all are inspected.
