Collection and Disposal of Refuse
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor, who is responsible for this
service reports as follows :—
(a) Household refuse is collected weekly by vehicles operated
on the relay system.
(b) Trade and special refuse is collected as and when required.
Eight 12 cubic yard capacity Scammell containers and two
Mechanical Horses are used for collection of household
refuse, and one Bedford lorry for trade and special refuse.
During the year 1963-64 the total tonnage of refuse collected
was 13,368 tons ; the income from salvaged material amounted to
£3,152.
The steam raised by the incineration of the refuse is used for
space and water heating at Western Road Baths.
