as the Borough of Wood Green finds precious little time to indulge
in more than its share of routine work. Sometime in the future,
this pattern may be reversed. When it is, it will be all to the
good.
INQUESTS
Twenty-seven inquests were held following the deaths of
Wood Green residents during 1961. A further 170 post mortem
examinations were carried out without an inquest, 60 of these in
the Prince of Wales Hospital which, by arrangement with the
Wood Green Borough Council, provides mortuary services.
MATERNAL MORTALITY
No cases of maternal mortality were reported.
INFANT MORTALITY
There were 17 deaths of infants under one year of age, which
gives an infant death rate of 26 8 per 1, 000 live births, as compared
with 22 deaths and a rate of 30.4 in the preceding year.
Among the 17 infants who died in Wood Green during 1961 before
they had reached the age of twelve months, 14 were under the age
of one month. of these, 12 failed to survive, one week, in fact
seven died in the first day.
Every infant death continues to be carefully scrutinised.
STILL-BIRTHS
Twelve still-births, 11 legitimate and one illegitimate were
accredited to the Borough for 1961. This is equal to a death
rate of 17.3 per 1,000 births the corresponding figures for 1960
being 11 still-births with a rate of 15. 2.
This rate is slightly higher than that for the previous year,
but so little and relating to such a small number of infant deaths
that the significance is negligible.
