Initial work on this Area was commenced in the latter part
of the year. A detailed survey of the Area concerned includes
visiting every house or property in the Area,.examining the grates
and fireplaces, deciding which are capable of burning coke the
extent of adaption or alteration required to those grates in
regular use which are not at present capable of burning a smokeless
fuel and estimating the cost of the work.
This work involves much tact courtesy and enthusians for
clean air on the part of the Inspectors and a thorough knowledge
of domestic and industrial heating appliances flues and fuels.
It also helps to promote good public relations between burgesses
and members of face Town Hall staff.
Plans have been made for an exhibition of the Solid Smokeless
Fuels Federation to be shown In the Area in the latter part of
1958. The ready co-operation of the residents in the Area to
accept the Council s programme for a Smoke Control Area is no
doubt partly due to the publicity which has already been given to
this important facet of Public Health,
