By 1931 advances had been made in the legislation towards a
pure milk supply, The greater part of the milk supply for the
district was by this time in the hands of large firms and combines,
which supplied the milk in bottles filled at their depots outside
the district-no longer were cattle kept in the district of Wood
Green. Premises from which milk was sold had to be registered and
licences issued permitting them to sell graded milk only, and the
Council had by this time the power to refuse and revoke the registration
of any retailer, although during that year it was not
found necessary to take any such action. During that year 95 espies
of milk were taken-these were not bacteriological tests
but tests for adulteration, only one case of which was found. Today
we enjoy that proper and sufficient milk supply that was so
earnestly sought fifty years ago.
(c) Food and Drugs Act, 1955, Section 16.
There are 11 premises registered for the manufacture of Ice
Cream in the district and 113 premises registered for retailing
Ice Cream. During the year, 57 visits were paid to these premises
and 6 samples were submitted for bacteriological examination.
These 6 samples were all Grade I.
Also 43 premises are registered under this Section for the
preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted, pressed, pickled
or preserved food intended for sale. Visits to these premises
during the year numbered 132.
