measured before going to camp, and weighed and measured again
on their return. The benefit resulting from a fortnight's holiday
under excellent conditions was, as in former years, very striking in
the great majority of the children. This annual holiday provided
free of charge to a large number of children who for the most part
have no other chance of getting such a holiday, is undoubtedly a
very valuable contribution to the health and well-being of these
children.
As in former years a number of children were sent for limited
periods, usually of six weeks, to residential open-air schools. These
are usually poorly nourished or debilitated children, sometimes
recovering from serious illness. Seven boys and seven girls were
sent to the Russell Cotes School of Recovery, at Parkstone, Dorset,
four boys and four girls to Collington Manor, Bexhill. In addition
to these, twenty-four boys and twenty girls were sent for shorter
periods, usually of a fortnight each, to the Shoeburyness Holiday
Home, which is run by the Palmers Green Samaritan Society.
X.—PHYSICAL TRAINING.
Physical training in the schools is carried out by the teachers
and is directed and supervised by special organisers. No direct
control over physical training is exercised by the School Medical
Officer, but he is from time to time asked to examine children with
a view to deciding whether they are fit to take part in the routine
games and exercises practised in the schools.
School Baths.
Very good use was made of the facilities provided by the Wood
Green Council at the various swimming pools. At the Western
Road Baths the attendances made by school children during the
year numbered 40,620, at the Open-Air Bath on the Alexandra Park
Race Course 2,135, and at the Swimming Pool in Durnsford Road
14,272. The number of school children gaining certificates of
proficiency in swimming from the Wood Green Schools' Sports
Association during the year was 1,672. This number included 164
certificates for swimming 880 yards.
