Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
Three cases of this disease were notified, two of whom were
admitted to hospital. Recovery without impairment of yision
occurred in each case.
Pneumonia.
There were 23 notifications of pneumonia. Notification of
this disease has never been satisfactory, as may be seen from the
fact that although there were only 23 cases notified there were
30 deaths certified as due to pneumonia. All notified cases are
visited by the District Nurses, under an arrangement made with
the District Nursing Association and an offer of home-nursing
made.
Erysipelas.
Eighteen cases of erysipelas were notified, six of whom were
admitted to hospital. Recovery took place in every case, erysipelas
being one of the infections which respond very favourably to the
use of the new sulphonamide preparations to which I have already
referred.
Non-Notifiable Infectious Diseases.
The number of cases of non-notifiable infectious diseases
reported to me during the year from the elementary schools was
as follows :—
Chicken-pox 145
Measles 440
Mumps 77
Whooping Cough 45
Skin Infections 5
702
On receipt of these notifications, visits to the homes are made
by the School Nurses, to make sure that proper treatment is being
provided and the necessary precautions taken in each case.
