a further 2 before the end of the first month. The chief causes
of death were congenital debility, which was responsible for
seven deaths, and broncho-pneumonia, and gastro-enteritis, each
of which caused five deaths.
MORTALITY OF CHILDREN BETWEEN ONE AND FIVE
YEARS.
Ten deaths occurred in children over one and under five years.
Of these five were caused by whooping cough, two by diphtheria,
and one by scarlet fever. Two were due to broncho-pnuemonia,
and one resulted from a burning accident. These deaths represent
a death-rate in this age group of 0.19 per 1,000 of the total population,
and 1.7 per cent of the total deaths for the year at all ages.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
Three deaths were registered as maternal deaths, death in two
cases occurring from septicaemia following a miscarriage. In the
third case death occurred from pneumonia and heart disease following
a difficult labour. During the previous year only one
maternal death occurred, and it is disappointing to have to record
three during 1937. The maternal mortality rate was 4.5 per
1,000 births.
