for the most part, selected by the Juvenile Organisations Committee
with the help of the head teachers, and a certain number were
recommended by the School Medical Officers on medical grounds.
The children were medically examined, weighed and measured
before going to camp, and again weighed and measured on their
return. As has been the experience, in former years, the benefit
derived by the children from a fortnight's holiday under excellent
conditions was in most cases very evident. This annual holiday
provided free of charge to such a large number of the less fortunately
circumstanced children in our schools cannot be regarded as other
than a very valuable contribution to the health and well-being of
these children.
As in former years also, a number of children were sent for
limited periods, usually of six weeks, to residential open-air schools.
These are, for the most part, poorly nourished or debilitated
children, sometimes recovering from serious illness. Eight boys
and eight girls were sent to the Russell Cotes School of Recovery,
at Parkstone, Dorset, and four boys and three girls to Collington
Manor, Bexhill. In addition to these, eighteen boys and twentyeight
girls were sent for shorter periods, usually of a fortnight each,
to the Shoeburyness Holiday Home, which is run by the Palmers
Green Samaritan Society.
X.—PHYSICAL TRAINING.
Physical training in the schools is carried out by the teachers
and is directed and supervised by two special organisers. No direct
control over physical training is exercised by the School Medical
Officer, but he is from time to time asked to examine children with
a view to deciding whether they are fit to take part in the routine
games and exercises practised in the schools.
School Baths.
Good use was made by the school children of the swimming
facilities provided by the Wood Green Council. At the Western
Road Baths the attendances made by school children during the
year numbered 22,110, at the Open-Air Bath on the Alexandra
Race Course 3,466, and at the Swimming Pool in Durnsford Road
