children privately from the family doctor or at hospital, but where
the family circumstances make it difficult or impossible for this to be
done provision has been made by the Education Committee for the
treatment of certain types of defect. At the School Clinic treatment
is provided for minor ailments, dental defects and defects of vision,
hearing and speech. Tonsils and adenoids have been dealt with at
the Prince of Wales's Hospital and the Royal Northern Hospital,
ultra-violet light provided at the North Middlesex Hospital and
Royal Northern Hospital, and X-ray treatment for ringworm at
the Royal Northern Hospital.
(a) Minor Ailments.
Twelve hundred and forty-four children were treated at the
Clinic for minor ailments. These comprise for the most part septic
conditions of the skin, minor injuries, inflammatory conditions of
the ears and eyes, and other like conditions which are apt to receive
insufficient attention at home, but may, if neglected, be injurious
to the child's health.
(b) Tonsils and Adenoids.
Two children were operated on during the year, under the
Committee's scheme, for enlarged tonsils and adenoids, while
twenty-three were dealt with privately by their own doctors or in
hospital. Children dealt with under the Committee's scheme are
admitted to the Prince of Wales's or to the Royal Northern Hospitals
for a minimum of two nights, being admitted the day previous to
and discharged not sooner than the day after operation. The
children are brought home in the Council's ambulance, and visited
for the next few days by the School Nurse.
(c) Visual Defects.
The number of children dealt with by Dr. Boden at the Eye
Clinic was 747, 258 of these being new cases. 325 children had
spectacles prescribed for them at the Clinic, and of this number
284 had obtained the spectacles by the end of the year. In addition,
thirteen children were fitted with spectacles privately or at hospital.
