Tuberculosis.
Table VII in the Appendix shows that the total number of new
cases of tuberculosis coming to the knowledge of the Health Department
during the year was 67, 59 respiratory and 8 non-respiratory,
Of this number, 57 were notified by doctors practising in the
district, or from hospital, while 10 were transferred from other
districts. The number of notifications received in 1936 was 71.
The number of deaths certified as due to tuberculosis was 26,
of which 24 were due to respiratory and 2 to non-respiratory
disease. These figures are a very great improvement on those for
1936, when there were 51 tuberculosis deaths, 46 respiratory and
5 non-respiratory. The death-rate was 0.48 per 1,000 of population,
as compared with 0.95 in 1936, and 0.45 in 1935.
Of the 24 deaths certified as due to respiratory tuberculosis,
16 occurred in the age period from 20 to 45 years. Of these eleven
were in males and five in females. Of the total of 26 deaths due
to all forms of tuberculosis five were in persons who had not previously
been notified in this district, as suffering from tuberculosis.
The arrangements for providing treatment for sufferers from
tuberculosis are in the hands of the County Council, and Dr. J. R.
Dobson, the Tuberculosis Medical Officer, has kindly supplied me
with the following figures relating to cases from Wood Green which
came under his care during the year:—
Total number of new tubercular cases 41
Transfers from other districts (not included in
above) 10
Total number of tubercular cases supervised at
or from the Dispensary in 1937 206
New cases and contacts examined and found to
be non-tubercular in 1937 81
Total number of tubercular cases still on the
Register at the end of 1937 158
