Immunisation against diphtheria has been carried on just as
in previous years, for the most part in the infant and junior
departments of the elementary schools, but also among children
under school age. During the year 738 children received full courses
of protective injections—each course consisting of three injections
of Toxoid-Antitoxin Mixture given at intervals of a fortnight—and
a further 12 were undergoing a course at the end of
the year. 1,226 children were Schick-tested during the year, and
206 were awaiting the Schick Test at the end of the year. The total
number of children immunised in Wood Green to the end of 1937
wras 4,978, and of this number 14 are known to have since contracted
diphtheria. In all these cases the attack was mild and all have
made a good recovery.
Enteric Fever.
Two cases were notified as enteric fever, and both turned out
to be para-typhoid. One case was notified from a general hospital
outside the district. The other was notified at home and was
admitted to the Isolation Hospital. In neither case was it possible
to discover the source of infection, and in both oases recovery
occurred.
Dysentery.
Three cases of dysentery were notified, one a child of three
months, who had been admitted to a hospital in London, and two
adults who were nursed at home. No. deaths occurred.
Cerebro-Spinal Fever.
Two notifications of this disease were received from a general
hospital outside the district, one an adult of 33 years and the other a
child of 9 months. Both cases proved fatal. Death also occurred
in another case, a child of 4 years also in the same hospital, which
was not notified.
