in Wood Green, but. in October the Council acting as agents for the
County Council of Middlesex, which is the Supervising Authority,
under the Midwives Act, 1936, appointed four municipal midwives,
one of whom commenced work in Wood Green in December.
It is at least very doubtful whether there will be sufficient work in
Wood Green to keep four municipal midwives adequately employed,
when such a large proportion of confinements take place year by
year in hospitals and nursing homes, but the provision of a municipal
midwifery service i.s certainly a step in the right direction.
The cost of the service is met by the County Council.
MATERNITY AND NURSING HOMES.
There were two Maternity Nursing Homes in the Borough
during 1937 registered by the Middlesex County Council.
Supervision of the Nursing Homes and of the midwives practising
in the Borough is in the hands of the County Council.
HOSPITALS.
1. Fever.
Wood Green is one of four authorities (Hornsey, Finchley,
Wood Green and Friern Barnet) which together' own and control
the Joint Isolation Hospital, Coppetts Road, Muswell Hill.
The Hospital is a good one, with an excellent modern observation
block, built on the cubicle system, and has accommodation for
one hundred and fifty patients.
The cases admitted are for the most part those of scarlet fever
and diphtheria, but in case of need accommodation is also available
for most other infectious diseases, except smallpox, puerperal
fever and ophthalmia neonatorum, for which other provision has
been made.
