POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for 1936 was
53,620 and I have used this figure to calculate the birth and death
rates for the year. It represents an increase of 150 in the population
from that of 1935 which was 53,470. The increase is very
slight, but it is the first increase in five years, the previous four
years all showing slight decreases, so that the population to-day
is 900 less than at the time of the last census in 1931. As Wood
Green is now practically built up there is not likely to be any
great increase in the number of inhabited houses, and therefore
no very great increase in the population in the immediate future.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered during the year was 700
as compared with 570 in 1935, and 564 in 1934. The number of
births is the highest since 1931, and represents a birth-rate of 13.1,
as compared with 10.7 in 1935. The birth-rate for the whole
country was 15.4 and for the 122 great towns (which includes
Wood Green) it was 15.6. In spite of the improvement therefore
which has taken place this year, the birth-rate for Wood Green is
still appreciably lower than both that of the whole country and that
of tihe great towns.
16 stillbirths were registered, 10 male and 6 female.

The births registered in the Borough were distributed in the different Wards as follows:—
