A further ten boys and ten girls were sent for periods of a fortnight
each to the Shoeburyness Holiday Home, which is run by the
Palmers Green Samaritan Society.
X.—PHYSICAL TRAINING.
Physical training in the schools is carried out by the teachers
and is directed and supervised by two special organisers. There is
no direct association with the School Medical Service.
School Baths.
The attendances of school children at the Western Road Baths
during the year numbered 26,019, at the Open-Air Bath on the
Alexandra Park Race Course 3,244, and at the Swimming Pool in
Durnsford Road 20,647. These figures are all lower than those for
the previous year. This was due, in the case of the open-air baths,
to the very poor summer weather we enjoyed, and in the case of
the Western Road Baths to the fact that these baths were closed
for a large part of the year on account of reconstruction. The
number of certificates of proficiency in swimming awarded to school
children during the year was 895. Of this number, 117—77 boys
and 40 girls—were awarded certificates for swimming 880 yards.
These numbers are much smaller than in previous years owing to
the closure of the Western Road Baths.
XI.—PROVISION OF MEALS.
A hot mid-day meal is provided throughout the year at the
Feeding Centre in White Hart Lane for a number of children who
are found to be in need of such a provision. The children are,
for the most part, selected on economic grounds and are usually
recommended by the teachers in the schools, although a number
are recommended by myself on definitely medical grounds. The
administration of the Feeding Centre is in the hands of the Director
of Education, and the food is served and the children waited on by
a number of ladies, most of whom are members of the Care Committee.
The dinners provided are wholesome and nutritious, and the menu
is subject to periodic revision to prevent monotony in the meals.
