(f) Defects of Speech.
The Speech Defect Clinic deals with children suffering from
stammering and other defects of speech. Two classes are held, one
for children of twelve years and over and one for children under
twelve, and each class is held twice weekly. The classes are limited
to eight children each, so that individual attention may be given.
This work is, in my opinion, very well worth doing, and although
the improvement in most cases is necessarily very slow, on the
whole excellent results are obtained, and in a considerable proportion
of cases complete cure is achieved.
VIII.—INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The incidence of infectious disease in the elementary schools
was very much the same in 1936 as in the previous year so far as
numbers were concerned. 889 cases were notified in 1936 as compared
with 864 in 1935.

The following table gives the numbers of cases of the different infectious diseases notified from the elementary schools in 1936 and 1935.

1936.1935.

Diphtheria6220
Chicken-pox188138
Measles39382
Mumps39361

It will be seen that measles was much more prevalent in 1936
than in 1935, 393 cases as compared with 82. The disease was
most prevalent in the early months of the year, 311 cases being
notified in the first quarter and 82 in the second. Chicken-pox was
widely prevalent in the first quarter, and whooping cough in the
last. The incidence of scarlet fever was very low as compared with
1935, but that of diphtheria much higher than in 1935.
