entirely by the action of the overcrowded families themselves in
finding other accommodation with the assistance in many instances
of sympathetic landlords. This was particularly the case with
one large housing estate, the Artisans and General Dwellings Company
Estate where every case of overcrowding was relieved as soon
as possible after notification by the offer of a larger house. One
case of overcrowding was relieved by the provision of a Council
house. This was one of the tenants in the Neville Place Slum
Clearance Scheme.
In the autumn months the vast majority of the houses in the
district were visited again and measured in detail, so that the
necessary information might be in the possession of the Health
Department to enable it to supply any owner before or on the
" appointed day" on which the overcrowding provisions of the
Housing Act, 1935, came into effect, with the permitted number of
persons in respect of any dwelling in which he was interested. The
appointed day for Wood Green was January 1st, 1937.
To deal with the overcrowding found to exist in Wood Green,
I have advised the Council that a minimum of 30 new houses is
required to house the most serious cases. So far, unfortunately, no
progress has been made in proceeding with this provision, on
account of the difficulty of finding a suitable site.

The 18 houses shown above as built by the Council during the
