during this period than is absolutely necessary, an arrangement
has been made with the County Health Department, by which the
routine supervision of these mothers is carried out at our Ant©
Natal Clinic in Wood Green. The mother is still seen at the
hospital at fixed intervals or at any time in case of any abnormality
being detected at tihe Clinic, and the ultimate responsibility for
the case remains with the hospital. Very definite advantages,
however, result from this co-operation between the hospital a-nd
the local Child Welfare Authority. The mother is relieved of the
fatigue of regular long journeys to hospital for the purpose of
routine examination. She has the benefit of all the facilities provided
at the local Child Welfare Centre, such as instruction in
personal hygiene, making of infant clothes, and provision of
extra nourishment in case, of need. She is also in constant touch
with the Health Visitors who visit her in her home and give her
the help and advice which is so useful at such a time particularly
to young mothers. Altogether this is a very useful form of cooperation
between hospital and local authority.
The number of births occurring in hospital or nursing home
is increasing steadily year by year, and in Wood Green as in
other districts it is becoming increasingly difficult for all mothers
who desire confinement in hospital to find the necessary accommodation.
During the year conferences have been held with the
neighbouring authorities of Hornsey and Finchley and joint communications
made to the Middlesex County Council with a view
to inducing the County to make more ample and convenient provision
for maternity hospital accommodation for these three
districts. It is understood that the County proposes to increase
the accommodation provided at the North Middlesex Hospital,
but it is felt that, this proposal does not altogether meet the case.
Dental Clinic.
