POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for 1935 was
53,470, and I have used this figure to calculate the birth and death
rates for the year. It represents a decrease of 285 in the population
from that of 1934 which was 53,755, and this is the fourth successive
year in which the Registrar-General's estimate has shown a slight
decrease of population. During that period several hundred new
houses have been built in the district, and as the birth-rate during
these years has been slightly higher than the death-rate, the estimate
if correct must mean that the number of people leaving the district
each year exceeds by several hundreds the number coming in.
With the district now practically fully buiit up, the likelihood is
that the slight fall in population which has been evident during
the past few years will continue.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered during the year was 570,
as compared with 564 for 1934 and 601 for 1933. Of the 570,
288 were male and 282 female. The birth-rate was 10.7 per 1,000
of population, a very slight increase on that for the previous year,
which was 10.5. The birth-rate for the whole country was 14.7,
and for the 121 great towns (which include Wood Green) it was
also 14.7, so that in 1935 as in previous years the birth-rate in
Wood Green was very much lower than both that of the whole
country and that of the great towns.
22 stillbirths were registered, 11 male and 11 female.
The births registered in the borough were distributed in the
different Wards as follows:—
Alexandra-Bowes 83
Town Hall 264
Noel Park 144
491
